Dr. Deirdre has the Heiress Flair #theheiressflair due to her enthusiastic advocacy for quality health programming, equity and social justice for marginalized populations.

In 2020, Dr. Young was named to Crain’s Detroit Business “40 Under 40”. The recipient of more than 100 proclamations recognizing her dedication to addressing the social determinants of health and loyalty to servicing children in Michigan, Deirdre has been recognized by two former Detroit mayors, the Detroit City Council and several other governmental bodies. Recently, the Michigan Chronicle named her as one of that year’s Women of Excellence, an honor recognizing local African American women for their exceptional leadership, achievements and service to the community.

Dr. Young has served in a variety of roles across metro Detroit. Currently, Dr. Young serves as Chief Diversity Officer and Assistant Dean for Institutional Equity & Inclusion at the College for Creative Studies (CCS). Dr. Young leads diversity, equity and inclusion efforts that guide campus-wide decisions, practices and policies to build stronger campus communities.

Dr. Young received a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of Michigan, and a master’s degree in health services administration from University of Detroit Mercy. She also holds a B.S. in chemistry from Howard University. She is an active member of the National Dental Association and has previously served as Chair of the Minority Affairs Section of the American Dental Education Association and on the advisory board for the Michigan Area Health Education Center, Pipeline and Outreach Initiatives. She is a mentor with the Tour for Diversity in Medicine, which travels the country promoting diversity among future physicians and dentists.

Dara N. King, MD is a native of Detroit, Michigan and considers herself “home grown”. She lives in Maryland, however, Detroit is where her heart resides. She attended Cass Technical High School in downtown Detroit.

She attended the University of Michigan, earning a Bachelor of

Science degree in Biopsychology and Cognitive Sciences. She

achieved her Doctor of Medicine at the Wayne State University

School of Medicine in Detroit and has been an OBGYN for 17 years. She believes that women should be treated with respect and dignity when they are dealing with their most intimate moments. As an physician, she has the honor of helping women feel empowered to take care

of their minds and bodies. Dr. King values and protects her patients’ trusts. She realizes her work is sensitive and her patients know that they are in a safe, judgment-

free space to share their goals and concerns.

Although she is a physician, Dr. King is quick to say her passion reach far beyond just medicine. She finds joy and fulfillment in mentoring and motivating young women to become the best part of themselves. She has mentored many young women over the years who have become powerful women in their own right. “I am Garnet Terri James, owner of @terriscakes Terri's Cakes Detroit. My path to ownership was different as I never wanted to be in the food industry. I have had my eye on hospitality and entreprenurship, however, since I was a young girl. I was educated in the Detroit Public School System and went on to receive my Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from Spelman College.

Just after Spelman, I moved to Kusatsu-shi, Shiga-ken, Japan to teach English Conversation in children. I decided to take this break from reality as I was unsure of what exactly I wanted my job to be. It was while living in Japan that I realized how broken and nonexistent our community and culture in America were. After my contract ended, and a few contract extensions were over, I headed back to Detroit and pursued a career in community affairs and nonprofit management.

After 10 years in this field, I was honored to take over the family business nearly 8 years ago today, simply so I could contribute to the community in my own way. Working for nonprofits and for-profit companies, I was restricted as to how I could give back. But, there was so much need. There was so much lack. There were so many voids. As a business owner, I choose to give back in a plethora of ways, from assisting new business owners to reach their potential, mentoring students that want to pursue business, or giving back to my local community - I am honored to serve daily.

For me, its personal. I was always blessed to receive top notch education, have access to extracurricular activities, learn about finance and investing and travel the world. But, I realize, everyone did not receive that same hand when the cards were dealt.

It's hard to say how I am making history, but my goal is to make change. And, every day, I do my part to learn what I can and teach what I know. I'm just glad to be in a position to give the world even a portion of what I have received. “

As an upcoming college grad (May 2020) with a B.S. in Biochemistry,  I will continue to contribute to my society regardless of my new-found setting by staying true to myself and passions; which ultimately has/will inspire & motivate others to do the same!

Graduating with 4 years of executive leadership as Vice-President for the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS) my last year and 2 years on the Dean’s List and 4 years of community service are a few things I am proud of!

Born and Raised in Detroit, MI Janae Coachman @__janae moved to Charlotte, NC at the age of 17 to pursue an education in Culinary Arts and Food and Beverage Entrepreneurship. She received her associates degree in 2018 and just completed her Bachelors this February. .

While attending school Janae became a great leader and motivation for her peers around her. She served as a peer leader for Bank of America Summer Bridge program this past summer. She has also worked at her school as a nutrition tutor for 3 years. While being in school she stayed involved with clubs and organizations on campus. Including sitting on the e-board for her choir and later becoming the president of her chapter for her sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She has had the opportunity to work at many prestigious events such as the Masters Golf Tournament in 2019. .

@__janae plans to continue to contribute to society by doing community service, feeding the homeless, and helping others in need in any way she can. Her main initiative while she severed as president for her sorority was mental health and helping others in her community get the proper help that is needed. Bria Jennings @briajennings_ is a Psychology Major (near and dear to the creator of The Heiress Flair’s heart 😉) Her career aspiration is to become a Clinical and Behavioral Psychologist — “I want to work with diagnosing and treating different mental and behavioral disorders. I have a special interest in working with children and minorities.” I really feel like if you’re in a position to give back you should, any way you can to whoever you can. You never know how far a little love and encouragement can go.

Victoria Williams is a proud native of Detroit, MI and is currently embracing city life in Chicago! She is passionate about storytelling, learning, and leading. Victoria is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the first intercollegiate historically Black Greek-lettered sorority.

At DePaul University as a first-generation college student, Victoria dedicated herself to advocating for students of color on campus as the President of the Black Student Union. She also worked as a Storytelling Assistant for the university to curate diverse content that represented a multitude of identities in DePaul’s marketing campaigns.

As a Communications professional, Victoria serves her local community as an Anchor on the Fellowship Chicago Church’s News Network. She hopes to always utilize her voice not only in her future career on-air, but to advocate for underserved communities. Victoria plans to begin her journey of obtaining her master’s degree in Broadcast Journalism this Fall!
